The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council ruled that women are “persons” under the constitution and eligible for the Senate — the victory of Alberta's Famous Five, led by Emily Murphy.

Nenshi elected Calgary mayor
Naheed Nenshi came from behind to win Calgary's mayoral election on October 18, 2010, taking 140,263 votes (about 40 per cent) to become the city's 36th mayor on a record 53 per cent turnout. He is widely noted as the first Muslim mayor of a major North American city.
