1982
Lodgepole sour gas blowout
On October 17, 1982, the Amoco Dome Brazeau River sour gas well blew out of control near Lodgepole, southwest of Edmonton, spewing hydrogen sulphide that could be smelled hundreds of kilometres away. It took 67 days to bring the well under control, and two Texan well-fighters died battling it; the disaster led to sweeping new sour gas safety rules in Alberta.
