75 of 75 municipalities shown · rates in mills (dollars per $1,000 of assessed value) for 2026 · an asterisk marks a total with no education portion published.
Withheld: Airdrie (education requisition outside a credible range); Val Quentin (not a credible mill rate). Alberta Municipal Affairs publishes these as filed by each municipality, and a few figures each year are plainly not rates — one this year would work out to a 500% tax. Rather than print them or drop them quietly, they are named here.
Common questions
- Which Alberta municipality has the lowest property tax?
- Of Alberta's 75 largest municipalities in 2026, Brazeau County levies the least on assessed value — about $2,346 on a home assessed at $500,000, against $6,937 in Wetaskiwin. That is tax per dollar of assessed value, not the cost of an equivalent house.
- What is a mill rate?
- A mill is one dollar of tax per $1,000 of assessed value. A rate of 7.7419 mills on a home assessed at $500,000 works out to $3,871 a year. Councils set the municipal rate each spring in their tax bylaw.
- Does a lower rate mean a cheaper place to live?
- Not on its own. The rate applies to what the assessor says your home is worth, and the same money buys very different property around the province. A town with a low rate and high assessments can bill more than a city with a high rate and low ones. Compare the tax on your own assessment, not on a notional $500,000 home.
- Is this my whole tax bill?
- No. It covers the municipal rate your council sets and the provincial education requisition. Some municipalities also levy separate seniors-housing or business-improvement charges, and a few have more than one residential rate. Your assessment notice is the authority.
