HBC signs the Deed of Surrender
The Hudson's Bay Company signed the Deed of Surrender, giving up Rupert's Land — the vast watershed territory that took in much of what became southern Alberta — for transfer to the young Dominion of Canada. Delayed by the Red River Resistance, the handover took effect on 15 July 1870.
