Author David A. Robertson to speak at RDP on Oct. 28

Red Deer Polytechnic's Perspectives series will host the award-winning writer at the Welikoklad Theatre Mainstage, with proceeds supporting student scholarships.

Red Deer Polytechnic will host author David A. Robertson as the featured speaker in its Perspectives: Canada in the World series on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Welikoklad Theatre Mainstage in the RDP Arts Centre.

Robertson has published more than 30 books spanning children's literature, graphic novels, memoirs and young adult fiction centred on Indigenous culture and history. He graduated from the University of Winnipeg in 1999 and began writing professionally in 2008, releasing his debut novel, The Evolution of Alice, in 2014. His accolades include the Governor General's Literary Award, the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award, the Writers' Union of Canada Freedom to Read Award and the Globe and Mail Children's Storyteller of the Year.

Dr. Robbie Halonen, Dean of RDP's School of Arts and Education, said engaging with authors who bring forward Indigenous voices helps the community broaden its understanding and strengthen its commitment to reconciliation. RDP said Robertson's talk will draw on his own experiences to examine how censorship operates and who is most affected by it.

Past Perspectives speakers have included astronaut Chris Hadfield, author Margaret Atwood and journalist Andrew Coyne. Proceeds from the series support future Perspectives events and scholarship funds for RDP students.
