Common questions
- Is Highway 1 to Banff open?
- Open — no closures reported. 4 construction zones reported.
- What is happening on Hwy 1 right now?
- Alberta 511 is reporting 4 construction zones on this route.
- What should I know before driving Hwy 1?
- A Parks Canada pass is required to stop anywhere in Banff National Park, including the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake areas. Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round.
- How long does it take to drive from Calgary to Banff?
- About 90 minutes for the 130 km along Highway 1 in clear conditions. Allow considerably longer in winter, on long weekends, and whenever a closure is in effect — the Trans-Canada has no practical detour through the mountain parks.
- Is there an alternative route if Highway 1 is closed?
- Between Canmore and Lake Louise, Highway 1A (the Bow Valley Parkway) parallels Highway 1 and is often the detour, though it is slower, partly seasonally restricted for wildlife, and can be closed by the same event. West of Lake Louise there is no alternative — Highway 1 is the only through route to the B.C. border.
