    First Alberta election with women voting; Louise McKinney elected

    Alberta held its 1917 general election, the first in which Alberta women could vote and stand for office. Louise McKinney won a seat as a Non-Partisan League candidate, becoming the first woman elected to a legislature in Canada and anywhere in the British Empire.
