Emergency alert saves the power grid
With the province in a deep freeze and electricity demand surging, a Critical Civil Emergency alert went to phones across Alberta at 6:44 p.m. warning of imminent rotating power outages and asking people to cut usage. Demand dropped about 200 megawatts within minutes and the grid alert ended by 8:40 p.m. with no outages.
