Where you can sled

Alberta cities designate the hills they consider fit for tobogganing, and publish the list. Designation is a safety decision as much as a recreational one — somebody has looked at what is at the bottom of the hill. Here they all are, mapped.

38 designated hills in 3 municipalities. List rebuilt August 14, 2026.

Before you go down it

  • Wear a helmet. A ski or hockey helmet is right for sledding speeds. Head injuries are what make tobogganing dangerous rather than merely cold.
  • Walk the hill first.Designated does not mean supervised or groomed, and nobody inspects it before you arrive. Look for ice, bare patches, rocks, and what is at the bottom — fences, roads, trees, open water.
  • Feet first, one at a time. Head-first is how the worst injuries happen. Wait until the run below is clear.
  • Sledding elsewhere may be prohibited.Cities designate hills partly to steer people away from the ones they have judged unsafe. A hill that is not on this list is not automatically fair game — some are signed and enforced.
