Medicine Hat's Theron Bensler named to SJHL 18U all-star team

The 18-year-old defenceman will join a roster of young SJHL talent facing off against Manitoba's top under-18 players in Saskatchewan next week.

Medicine Hat's Theron Bensler has been named to Team SJHL 18U for the third annual Western All-Star Challenge, set for Nov. 3 and 4 in Martensville, Sask. The event pits the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's younger players against their Manitoba Junior Hockey League counterparts, with eligibility limited to players born in 2008 or later.

Bensler, 18, plays defence for the Warman Wolverines and has posted 11 points in 14 games this season, with four goals and seven assists. Before joining the SJHL, he spent two seasons with the Yale Hockey Academy U18 Prep team, one season with the South Alberta Hockey Academy U17 Prep team, and two seasons with the SEAC Tigers U15 AAA team.

Also named to the team is Hayden Iron Shirt of Lethbridge, an 18-year-old forward with the Weyburn Red Wings. Last year's challenge featured Medicine Hat's Cash Olson playing for the SJHL and Redcliff's Wyatt Dreger suiting up for the MJHL.

Teams will hold practices Monday and Tuesday before games at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday and 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.
