Medicine Hat police seize $104K in cocaine, firearms after search warrant

Two Medicine Hat residents face numerous charges following a Sept. 24 raid that turned up drugs, weapons and cash at a southeast home.

Medicine Hat Police's Major Crimes Unit, assisted by patrol officers, executed a search warrant on Sept. 24 at a residence in the 300 block of Stratton Way SE. The search yielded approximately 1,042 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of $104,000, 13.5 grams of methamphetamine and $18,689 in Canadian currency.

Investigators also recovered several firearms, including a loaded 10-millimetre Glock handgun with a defaced serial number, a nine-millimetre handgun and two sawed-off shotguns. Other items seized included conducted-energy weapons, brass knuckles, knives, pepper spray, collapsible batons and items consistent with drug trafficking.

Sean Bowers, 45, of Medicine Hat faces charges including possession of cocaine and methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, nine counts of breaching a firearms prohibition, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and three counts of breaching a release order. Ashley Barker, 41, also of Medicine Hat, faces similar drug trafficking and proceeds-of-crime charges along with several firearms-related offences.

Both Bowers and Barker were remanded into custody following judicial interim release hearings and were scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Medicine Hat on Sept. 29. The allegations have not been proven in court.
