Grande Prairie closes City Hall, museum and rinks for Truth and Reconciliation Day

City facilities in Grande Prairie will shut down or run limited hours on Sept. 30 as Canada marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Grande Prairie will close several City facilities on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday first established in June 2021 to honour residential school survivors and reflect on their lasting impacts.

City Hall, the City Service Centre, Bonnetts Energy Centre, the Grande Prairie Museum, Dave Barr Community Centre, Keyera Place and Cedar Point will all be fully closed for the day.

Other facilities will operate on limited holiday hours. The Ernie Radbourne Pavilion at Muskoseepi Park, the Eastlink Centre and Design Works Centre will be open from noon to 5 p.m., while the Montrose Cultural Centre will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Transit service will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed by late-night on-demand service until 8 p.m.

Residents seeking more information on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, inspired by Orange Shirt Day, can visit the federal government's website.
