Weyerhaeuser holds Grande Cache open house on 2029-2039 harvest plan

The Grande Prairie pulp mill operator is seeking public feedback as it renews its decade-long forest harvest plan, with no changes to its overall management strategy.

Weyerhaeuser held a public open house in Grande Cache, following a similar session in Grande Prairie, as part of efforts to gather input on its next harvest plan covering 2029 through 2039. The sessions ran from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grande Cache Inn.

Forest Planning Manager Traci Carter said the company is only updating which areas will be harvested in the coming decade, with its broader forest management strategies remaining unchanged. She said Weyerhaeuser plans to cut roughly the same number of trees and hectares annually as it has done previously.

Carter noted the company planted about 12 million trees this year and aims to replant every harvested hectare within two years, targeting two trees planted for every one cut down.

Attendees at the Grande Prairie open house included trappers, outfitters, quadders, campers, and members of the local snowmobile association, along with teachers. Carter said she was encouraged to see young people, including high school forestry students, taking an interest in the industry, which she noted has faced challenges recruiting new employees.
