Innisfail schools stage mock scooter-vehicle collision for safety lesson
Grade four and five students watched emergency crews respond to a staged collision as part of a road-safety education exercise at a shared bus loop.
Students from Innisfail Middle School, John Wilson Elementary School and St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Catholic School took part in a joint safety exercise on Thursday, held at the bus loop shared by the three schools. The event was organized by the Parkland Regional Safety Committee in partnership with Chinook's Edge and Red Deer Catholic school divisions.
The demonstration featured a mock collision between a distracted scooter rider and a vehicle. Firefighters, paramedics and RCMP responded to the staged scene as they would to an actual 911 call, walking students through real emergency procedures.
Organizers said the goal was to reinforce the importance of staying alert and making safe choices to prevent real-life collisions. Innisfail Middle School principal Kirsten Strand said the exercise helps middle schoolers, who are gaining more independence, build confidence to assess risks and make responsible decisions.
Beyond witnessing the emergency response, students also learned about Personal Protective Equipment and other practical tools for keeping themselves and others safe.
