Two youths charged after stolen vehicle crashes in Medicine Hat

Police used a service dog and a drone to track down two suspects after a stolen vehicle fled officers and struck a parked car in southeast Medicine Hat.

The Medicine Hat Police Service responded to a driving complaint near St. Patrick's School on Stratton Way S.E. at about 6:09 p.m. Wednesday, later confirming the vehicle involved had been reported stolen earlier that day and had already fled from police once.

Officers located the vehicle again on Stratton Way and attempted a stop, but the driver fled without being pursued, as officers cited public safety concerns. Shortly after, the vehicle collided with a parked car on Smithson Street S.E., and its occupants abandoned it and ran on foot.

Police set up containment in the area and used a police service dog and a drone to search for the suspects, locating two youths nearby who were arrested without incident.

One youth faces charges including possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and Traffic Safety Act offences, and was released with conditions ahead of an Oct. 29 Youth Justice Court appearance. The second youth, charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and failing to comply with a youth probation order, was remanded into custody with a court appearance set for Sept. 14. Both youths are protected from identification under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
