A confrontation over property damage in Woodland County escalated when a man fired a gun into the air and then aimed it at the person who caught him in the act.

Whitecourt RCMP have arrested two suspects following a Sept. 4 firearms complaint in Woodland County. Police said a complainant witnessed a man and woman on a quad damaging their property, and the man fired a shot into the air before pointing the firearm at the complainant. Both suspects then loaded their ATV into a cube van and fled the scene.

Mounties from multiple detachments searched the area and located the pair. Richard Helewka, 45, of Whitecourt, faces 14 charges including pointing a firearm, discharging a firearm with intent, assault with a weapon, uttering threats, and possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number. Alanda Sisson, 31, of Woodland County, faces five charges, including possession of property obtained by crime and possession of a restricted firearm without a licence.

Helewka was remanded into custody and appeared in court on Sept. 8. Sisson was released and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 22. RCMP thanked members of the public for their help in locating the suspects.
