Red Deer's Xplore Sport Day returns to Collicutt Centre Sept. 12
Organizers expect up to 1,000 people to sample dozens of sports for free at this year's event.
Central Sport is hosting its fourth annual Xplore Sport 365 and "Try it Free" day on Saturday, Sept. 12, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Collicutt Centre in Red Deer. The free drop-in event lets residents of all ages try sports offered across central Alberta, from swimming and curling to fencing, dancing and skiing.
Central Sport CEO Trevor Thomas said the event has grown each year as more organizations join. This year, 24 sports groups are confirmed to attend, including Central Alberta Handball, Game Day Adventures-Bunnock, Red Deer Fish and Game Junior Shooters, and the Old School Hockey Association.
Thomas said the event typically draws 800 to 1,000 participants and 25 to 30 organizations, with try-it stations set up throughout the centre so attendees can learn basic skills and ask questions. He noted many participating groups use the day to recruit new members.
A booth will also be set up for people interested in volunteering; Central Sport has already had volunteers sign up for 55 sporting events this year, including the upcoming IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Red Deer.
