Lethbridge's parkrun helps drive national record on 10th anniversary

parkrun Canada set a national participation record on Aug. 22 as part of celebrations marking the organization's 10th anniversary, according to parkrun officials. The milestone highlights a decade of growth for the free weekly 5K events held across the country.

Lethbridge has played a role in that history, with organizers noting the local event started seven years ago and has since held 317 events at Henderson Lake Park. The Lethbridge parkrun takes place every Saturday at 9 a.m., is free to attend, and welcomes participants of all ages, including strollers and leashed dogs.

Officials describe parkrun as more than a race, since there are no winners or time limits and participants can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or simply watch. Organizers say the format is designed to remove barriers to participation and provide a consistent, low-pressure opportunity for social connection amid growing concerns about isolation.

There are more than 60 parkrun events held across Canada, and organizers say nearly half a million people take part in parkruns worldwide each week.
